This is a relativly easy par four to get the golfer going. It was designed to help him warm up, to let his toast and coffee settle a bit, to avoid him straining his back by trying to swing to hard. It is not a pushover, however. I do believe the first hole should be an easy birdie hole: that is too obvious, too condescending.

To me the first hole should be a classically straightforward introduction, like a well-trained butler opening the door to a palace. You would not want to climb an Everest of steps to the entrance, but no one needs a downhill ramp either.

Here you are politely and warmly welcomed through the portals of the course. Even the trap on the fairway is directional, not punitive. Most of the mounds and trees are there to protect the driving range. I hope it is a gentle, pleasant and agreeable hole. By the way, it is also downwind.
